Fiji, one boat at a time.
Which island day gets you reef instead of a crowded pontoon. Whether the mud pools are worth the drive up the Sabeto valley. What a transfer out of Nadi should cost when your flight lands at four in the morning. Every tour in Fiji, reviewed.
The days people fly to Fiji for.
Reef islands you can reach before lunch, sulphur mud that dries grey on your shoulders, kava in a village hall, and a boat that leaves you on a floating bar in the middle of the Mamanucas.
The most booked days out in Fiji.
Every review →More travellers take these than anything else in the country: the day cruises out of Port Denarau, the jet boat up the Sigatoka, the hot mud above Nadi.

Everything in Fiji begins in Nadi.
The international runway, the sugar-town main street and the boat terminals twenty minutes down the road. Most trips start and finish here, and the best half-days never leave the valley: sulphur pools at Sabeto, orchids under the Sleeping Giant ridge, the temple at the south end of town.
Every Fiji trip needs one day out on the reef.

The boats leave Port Denarau between eight and nine and they are back before the light goes. What changes is where they drop you: a sand island with a bar, a beach club with loungers, or a two-storey pontoon anchored over the reef with nothing else in sight.

A sand island, lunch aboard, reef in between
Catamaran out through the Mamanuca chain, a few hours on a beach you can walk around in ten minutes, snorkelling off the back of the boat and a buffet under the awning on the way home.
Denarau is the jetty every boat leaves from.
A causeway off the mainland, a row of resorts and one busy marina. Nobody comes to Fiji for Denarau — they come because the catamaran to South Sea Island, Malamala and Cloud 9 pulls away from its pontoon at half past eight, and the sunset boat ties up there again at dusk.
Three things you only do in Fiji.
Reef islands and beach clubs exist all over the Pacific. The kava bowl, the sulphur mud and a bar anchored miles from any land belong to this country.

Kava, Meke and Lovo
A village visit runs to a form. You arrive with a bundle of yaqona root, someone speaks for your group, and the bowl goes round — muddy, peppery, faintly numbing on the lips. Then the meke, the songs and dances the village keeps its own history in, and a lovo lunch lifted out of an earth oven that has been steaming since morning. Cover your knees and take your hat off before you go in.

The Hot Mud Pools
Under the ridge they call the Sleeping Giant the ground leaks hot sulphur. You wade into a warm grey pool, plaster yourself, stand in the sun until the mud cracks on your shoulders, then rinse it off through a chain of hotter and hotter springs. It is the least glamorous morning in Fiji and the one everyone photographs. Wear a swimsuit you do not care about.

The Floating Bars
Somewhere out in the Mamanucas a two-storey pontoon sits over the reef with no island attached to it. A boat brings you out mid-morning, you swim off the ladder, eat pizza from a wood oven, and the same boat takes you back before the light goes. There is one crossing home and it does not wait.

What a day out in Fiji actually costs.
Three price bands, and what each one actually buys you here. The cheapest days in Fiji are the ones Fijians take too.
Inland Viti Levu is where Fiji stops being a beach.
Behind the coast road the island goes green and steep. The Sigatoka runs down out of the highlands and the Navua cuts a gorge you can only enter by boat; there are villages up both that a bus cannot reach, a cave with a lovo lunch at its mouth, and waterfalls that stay cold all year.

Book these before you fly into Nadi.
Most of Fiji can wait until you are standing in it. These cannot: one boat goes out, one boat comes back, and no resort desk can conjure a seat on either.
- 01Day Trip to Cloud 9 Floating Platform Including Food and BeveragesOne crossing out, one back, and a platform that only holds so many. It is a long way offshore to miss the boat.
- 02Malamala Beach Club – Full DayA capped day pass on a small island, sold against a fixed catamaran timetable out of Port Denarau.
- 03Seventh Heaven Fiji 6 Hour Experience on a Floating PlatformA single six-hour slot on a pontoon anchored offshore. There is one departure a day and it leaves without you.
- 04Private Transfer-Nadi International Airport to HotelsLong-haul flights land at Nadi before dawn. A booked driver is holding a sign; the alternative is negotiating a fare at four in the morning.

Fijian rain is warm, and half the best days ignore it.
From November to April the afternoon comes down hard for an hour and then clears. Hot pools do not care. Neither does a limestone cave, a village hall, a covered market or the sulphur mud you were going to get filthy in anyway. Cyclone season is a real line on the calendar; a wet afternoon is not.
